How To Remove A Wall Mirror That Is Glued On

Removing wall-mounted mirrors can be a simple process, but if the adhesive is especially strong, you might encounter some challenges. The key is to use the right tools and techniques to avoid damage to the mirror or the wall. Fortunately, with a little preparation and patience, you can remove the glued-on mirror and restore your space to its previous condition.

Before embarking on this task, it is essential to gather the proper materials. These include:

  • A heat gun or hairdryer
  • A sturdy putty knife
  • A razor blade or utility knife
  • A cloth or sponge
  • Denatured alcohol or rubbing alcohol
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Once you have gathered your supplies, ensure you have adequate lighting and ventilation in the work area.

    Step 1: Preparation

Before removing the mirror, wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from any flying glass or debris. Additionally, spread a drop cloth or old towels around the base of the mirror to catch any falling pieces.

    Step 2: Softening the Adhesive

The key to removing a glued-on mirror is to soften the adhesive holding it in place. To do this, you can use a heat gun or a hairdryer. Hold the heat source about six inches away from the mirror and move it around in a circular motion until the adhesive becomes soft and pliable. Be careful not to hold the heat source too close to the mirror, as this could damage the reflective surface.

    Step 3: Removing the Mirror

Once the adhesive has softened, use a sturdy putty knife to gently pry the mirror away from the wall. Start at one corner and work your way around until the mirror is completely detached. If the adhesive is particularly strong, you may need to use a razor blade or utility knife to cut through it. However, be very careful not to scratch the mirror or the wall.

    Step 4: Cleaning the Surface

Once the mirror is removed, use a cloth or sponge dampened with denatured or rubbing alcohol to clean the adhesive residue from the wall and the back of the mirror. Denatured alcohol is a more potent solvent than rubbing alcohol, but both will effectively remove most adhesives. Wipe the surfaces until they are clean and free of any adhesive residue.

Step 5: Reattaching the Mirror (Optional)

If you are reattaching the mirror to the same location, use a construction adhesive specifically designed for mirrors. Apply the adhesive to the back of the mirror and press it firmly against the wall. Hold the mirror in place for a few minutes until the adhesive has set.
