How to Frame a Mirror with Tile

Tiling around a mirror is a great way to add a touch of elegance and style to any room. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.

Here are the essential steps on how to frame a mirror with tile:

1. Gather Your Materials

  • Mirror
  • Tiles
  • Thinset mortar
  • Grout
  • Tile spacers
  • Notched trowel
  • Float
  • Grout float
  • Sponge
  • Caulk

2. Prepare the Mirror

If the mirror is new, you can skip this step. If the mirror is old, you will need to clean it thoroughly with a glass cleaner. Once the mirror is clean, you will need to apply a thin layer of caulk around the edges of the mirror. This will help to seal the mirror and prevent moisture from getting behind it.

3. Apply Thinset Mortar to the Wall

Using a notched trowel, apply a thin layer of thinset mortar to the wall around the mirror. Be sure to spread the mortar evenly and avoid getting any on the mirror itself.

4. Place the Tiles

Starting from the corner of the mirror, begin placing the tiles on the wall. Use tile spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced. Once the first row of tiles is complete, continue placing tiles until the entire mirror is framed.

5. Grout the Tiles

Once the tiles are in place, you will need to grout them. To do this, mix the grout according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a grout float, apply the grout to the joints between the tiles. Be sure to press the grout into the joints firmly.

6. Clean the Tiles

After the grout has dried, you will need to clean the tiles. Use a sponge and clean water to wipe down the tiles. Be sure to remove all of the grout residue.

7. Caulk the Edges

To finish the project, you will need to caulk the edges of the tiles. This will help to seal the tiles and prevent moisture from getting behind them. Apply a thin bead of caulk around the edges of the tiles and smooth it out with your finger.

That's it! You have now successfully tiled around a mirror.
