DIY Frame a Mirror with Molding: A Step-by-Step Guide
Adding a decorative frame to a mirror is a fantastic way to enhance its aesthetics and complement your home décor. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or a novice looking for a fun project, framing a mirror with molding is a relatively straightforward task that can be accomplished with minimal tools and materials.
Gather Your Materials
Before embarking on your mirror framing adventure, ensure you have all the necessary supplies. You will need:
- Mirror of your desired size and shape
- Molding (enough to cover the perimeter of the mirror plus a few inches for overlap)
- Miter saw or miter box
- Wood glue
- Clamps
- Nails or a brad nailer
- Hammer or brad nailer
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Measure and Cut the Molding
Measure the perimeter of the mirror and add a few inches to the length to allow for overlap. Using a miter saw or a miter box, cut the molding into four equal pieces at 45-degree angles.
Tip: If you don't have a miter saw, you can use a protractor to mark the 45-degree angles and cut the molding with a handsaw.
Assemble the Frame
Apply wood glue to the mitered edges of the molding pieces. Join the pieces together, forming a rectangular frame. Use clamps to hold the frame securely in place while it dries.
Once the glue has dried, reinforce the corners with nails or use a brad nailer. Countersink the nails slightly using a nail set.
Attach the Frame to the Mirror
Apply a generous amount of wood glue to the back of the frame. Carefully center the mirror inside the frame and press down firmly. Use clamps to secure the mirror in place.
Finishing Touches
Wipe away any excess glue that may have oozed out. Allow the glue to dry completely before hanging the mirror. You can paint or stain the frame to match your desired look.
Congratulations! You have successfully framed a mirror with molding.
