Creating Your Own Full-Length Tri-Fold Mirror: A Step-by-Step Guide

A full-length tri-fold mirror is a versatile and practical addition to any bedroom, dressing room, or bathroom. It allows you to check your outfit from head to toe while also saving valuable floor space. Building your own tri-fold mirror is easier than you might think and can be customized to fit your style and needs.

Materials and Tools

To get started, you will need the following materials:

  • Three full-length mirrors (at least 20 inches wide)
  • 3/4-inch plywood
  • Wood glue
  • Brad nails or screws
  • Hinges
  • Mirror mastic or adhesive strips
  • Paint or stain (optional)

You will also need the following tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Paintbrush or stain applicator (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the Plywood

Cut two pieces of plywood to the same width and height as your mirrors. These will form the back and front panels of the tri-fold mirror.

Step 2: Attach the Mirrors

Apply mirror mastic or adhesive strips to the back of the mirrors and press them onto the back panel of the plywood. Make sure to align the mirrors evenly.

Step 3: Add the Hinges

Determine the location of the hinges on the side and center panels. Mark the spots with a pencil. Then, attach the hinges to the plywood using screws or nails.

Step 4: Assemble the Tri-Fold Mirror

Stand up the back panel of the plywood and connect the side panels to the hinges. The side panels should fold in towards the center panel.

Step 5: Finish the Mirror

If desired, you can paint or stain the plywood to match your decor. Allow the finish to dry completely before hanging the mirror.

Tips for Success

Use clear wood glue: Clear wood glue will prevent any discoloration from showing through the mirror mastic or adhesive strips.

Pre-drill holes for screws: Pre-drilling holes will prevent the plywood from splitting when you insert the screws.

Level the mirrors: Use a level to make sure the mirrors are hung evenly to avoid any distortion.

Reinforce the hinges: If you are using heavy mirrors, consider adding additional screws or nails to reinforce the hinges.

Customize it: You can customize the design of your tri-fold mirror by adding decorative trim, painting the plywood a different color, or adding hooks for hanging jewelry.
