How to Antique a Mirror Frame

Antiqued mirror frames add a touch of vintage charm to any space. Whether you're looking to give a new mirror an aged look or restore an old one, antiquing a mirror frame is a relatively easy process that can be done at home with a few simple supplies.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Paint brush
  • Acrylic paint (in a dark color)
  • Wood stain (in a dark color)
  • Vaseline or petroleum jelly
  • Old rags or paper towels
  • Clear spray sealer (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Frame

Start by sanding the mirror frame with medium-grit sandpaper to remove any existing finish. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth. If the frame has any intricate details, sand carefully to avoid damaging them.

Step 2: Apply Paint

Using a paint brush, apply a thin layer of acrylic paint to the frame. Choose a dark color to create a more aged look. Allow the paint to dry completely.

Step 3: Apply Stain

Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of wood stain to the frame. Use a wood stain in a dark color to create a deeper, richer look. Allow the stain to dry for the recommended time on the product label.

Step 4: Distress the Frame

To give the frame an antiqued look, distress it by lightly sanding the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. You can also use a sanding sponge or steel wool to create a more textured look.

Step 5: Apply Vaseline

Apply a thin layer of Vaseline or petroleum jelly to the areas of the frame you want to highlight. This will prevent the paint from adhering in these areas, creating a worn and antiqued effect.

Step 6: Re-Apply Paint and Stain

Re-apply a thin layer of acrylic paint and wood stain to the frame, making sure to avoid the areas where you applied Vaseline. Allow the paint and stain to dry completely.

Step 7: Remove Vaseline

Use a rag or paper towel to remove the Vaseline. This will reveal the distressed areas of the frame, creating an antiqued look.

Step 8: Apply Sealer (Optional)

To protect the antiqued finish, you can apply a clear spray sealer to the frame. Allow the sealer to dry completely before using the mirror.
