How to Change a Broken Side Mirror Glass

A damaged side mirror glass can be a safety hazard and inconvenience while driving. If your side mirror glass has been shattered or cracked, it's important to replace it promptly. Replacing the glass is a relatively simple task that can be completed in under an hour with the right tools and materials.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Replacement side mirror glass (specific to your vehicle model and year)
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool (optional but recommended)
  • Clean cloth
  • Gloves (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Safety First:

Before commencing any work, park your vehicle on a flat and stable surface and engage the parking brake. Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery to prevent any electrical accidents.

2. Remove the Mirror Housing:

Locate the screws holding the mirror housing in place. Typically, there are two or three screws hidden behind a plastic cover or cap. Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws and carefully detach the mirror housing from the door.

3. Unclip the Old Glass:

Once the mirror housing is removed, you will see the broken glass held in place by clips or tabs. Carefully pry the clips apart using a trim removal tool or a flathead screwdriver to release the old glass.

4. Clean the Housing:

Use a clean cloth to wipe away any debris or adhesive residue from the mirror housing. This will ensure a proper fit for the new glass.

5. Install the New Glass:

Align the replacement glass with the clips or tabs on the mirror housing and gently push it into place. Apply light pressure until you hear a click or feel it snap securely into position.

6. Reattach the Mirror Housing:

Carefully align the mirror housing with the mounting points on the door. Reinsert the screws and tighten them securely using the Phillips head screwdriver.

7. Reconnect the Battery:

Once the mirror housing is securely fastened, reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

8. Final Checks:

Adjust the side mirror to the desired position and ensure it is firmly secured. Start the engine and briefly test the mirror's functionality by adjusting it from inside the vehicle.

Tips:

  • Always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions and safety precautions.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from broken glass or sharp edges.
  • Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the mirror housing.
  • If the old glass is badly shattered, use a vacuum cleaner or compressed air to remove any small fragments before handling the mirror housing.
  • If you are uncomfortable or unsure about any step, it is best to seek professional assistance.
