How to Fix a Broken Side View Mirror
A damaged side view mirror can make driving hazardous, as it impairs your ability to see behind you. Fortunately, fixing a broken side view mirror is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair that you can do yourself with the right tools and materials.
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- New side view mirror (make and model specific)
- Socket wrench or screwdriver
- Electrical tape (optional)
- Adhesive remover (optional)
Steps:
- Remove the old side view mirror: Locate the retaining bolts or screws securing the mirror to the door panel. Use the socket wrench or screwdriver to remove these fasteners. Carefully pull the mirror off the door, disconnecting any electrical connectors if necessary.
- Prepare the new side view mirror: Remove the backing from the adhesive tape on the back of the new mirror. If the new mirror does not come with adhesive tape, apply a thin layer of adhesive remover to the back of the mirror and the mounting surface on the door.
- Install the new side view mirror: Align the new mirror with the mounting surface on the door panel and press firmly to secure it. Hold it in place for several minutes to allow the adhesive to cure.
- Reattach the electrical connectors: If the mirror has electrical features such as heated or adjustable glass, reconnect the electrical connectors. Ensure they are properly seated and secure.
- Tighten the retaining bolts or screws: Use the socket wrench or screwdriver to tighten the retaining bolts or screws that hold the mirror in place. Ensure the mirror is securely mounted and does not move.
Additional Tips:
- If the mirror housing is damaged but the glass is intact, you may be able to replace just the glass.
- If the mirror is electrically adjustable, test the functionality of the controls after installation.
- If you are uncomfortable working on electrical components, consult with a qualified mechanic.
