How to Fix a Car Side View Mirror

Side view mirrors, also known as wing mirrors or door mirrors, are essential for safe driving as they provide drivers with a clear view of the blind spots on both sides of their vehicle.

When a side view mirror becomes damaged or misaligned, it can significantly impair the driver's visibility and increase the risk of an accident. Fortunately, fixing a car side view mirror is often a straightforward and inexpensive task that can be completed with a few simple tools.

In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to fix a car side view mirror, whether it is loose, broken, or misaligned.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Tools

Before you begin, gather the following tools:

  • Screwdriver (Phillips or flathead, depending on the mirror design)
  • Wrench (if necessary)
  • Clean cloth
  • Glass cleaner (optional)
  • Replacement mirror glass (if necessary)

Step 2: Locate the Adjustment Screws

Most side view mirrors have two adjustment screws: one for vertical adjustment and one for horizontal adjustment. Locate these screws on the base of the mirror housing.

Step 3: Adjust the Vertical Alignment

Use the vertical adjustment screw to move the mirror up or down until you have a clear view of the ground behind your vehicle. The bottom edge of the mirror should be aligned with the horizon.

Step 4: Adjust the Horizontal Alignment

Use the horizontal adjustment screw to move the mirror left or right until you can see the side of your vehicle in the mirror. The mirror should be positioned so that you can see the rear bumper of your vehicle in the outer third of the mirror.

Step 5: Tighten the Mounting Nuts or Bolts

Once the mirror is aligned correctly, use the wrench to tighten the mounting nuts or bolts that hold the mirror in place. Make sure not to overtighten them.

Step 6: Reattach the Mirror Glass (if Necessary)

If the mirror glass is broken or damaged, you will need to replace it. Clean the mirror housing and the back of the replacement glass with a clean cloth and glass cleaner.

Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the replacement glass and position it in the mirror housing. Press firmly to secure it.

Step 7: Test the Mirror

Once the mirror is fixed, test it by driving the vehicle and checking your visibility. Ensure that you have a clear view of the blind spots on both sides of the vehicle and that the mirror is not vibrating excessively.

Tips:

  • If the mirror housing is damaged, you may need to replace the entire mirror assembly.
  • If you are unsure about how to fix your car side view mirror, consult a qualified mechanic.
  • Regularly clean your side view mirrors to keep them free of dirt and debris, which can impair visibility.
  • Replace damaged or broken side view mirrors promptly to ensure optimal visibility and safety while driving.
