How to Fix a Mirror on Wardrobe Door

A broken or loose mirror on a wardrobe door can not only be an eyesore, but also a safety hazard. Fortunately, it is a relatively simple repair that can be done in a few minutes with the right tools and materials.

1. Safety First

Before you start, put on safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying glass in case the mirror breaks further. Remove any items from the wardrobe and place them in a safe place.

2. Remove the Door

Most wardrobe doors are attached to the frame with hinges. Open the door fully and locate the hinges. Use a screwdriver or drill to remove the screws that hold the hinges in place. If the door is heavy or awkward, it is helpful to have a helper assist you.

3. Remove the Mirror

Once the door is removed, lay it flat on a work surface. Use a utility knife to carefully cut away any old adhesive or sealant around the edges of the mirror. Be careful not to scratch the mirror or the door.

4. Clean the Surfaces

Clean the back of the mirror and the surface of the door where the mirror will be attached with a glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth. This will remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with the adhesive.

5. Apply Adhesive

Apply a thin layer of mirror adhesive to the back of the mirror. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper type of adhesive and application method. Some adhesives require a curing time before they bond, so be sure to allow sufficient time before proceeding.

6. Attach the Mirror

Carefully align the mirror with the door and press it into place. Apply pressure evenly to ensure that the adhesive bonds securely. Use masking tape or clamps to hold the mirror in place while the adhesive dries.

7. Reinstall the Door

Once the adhesive has dried, you can reinstall the door. Align the hinges with the holes in the frame and secure them with screws. Check that the door opens and closes smoothly.

Tips

  • If the mirror is badly cracked or shattered, it is best to replace it rather than trying to repair it.
  • Use a high-quality mirror adhesive specifically designed for glass-to-wood bonding.
  • Allow plenty of time for the adhesive to dry before using the door.
  • If you are unsure about any step, consult a professional.
