How to Make a Mirror in Minecraft Using Banners

Mirrors aren't a directly craftable item in Minecraft. However, the game's mechanics allow for creating a mirror-like effect using banners and the "clone mode" functionality. This effect allows players to duplicate a build, effectively mirroring it across a defined axis. This article will detail the process of setting up this system and discuss its limitations.

The core of this "mirror" relies on the structure block. Structure blocks are items primarily used for saving and loading builds. To obtain a structure block, players must use the command /give @s structure_block. This command requires cheats to be enabled in the world or server.

Once a structure block has been obtained, the next step involves defining the area to be mirrored. Place the structure block at a corner of the desired area. This corner will act as an anchor point for the mirroring process. Right-click the structure block to access its interface. A name must be assigned to the structure; this name should be unique and easily identifiable. Next, the dimensions of the area need to be defined using the "Size" fields (X, Y, and Z). These values represent the number of blocks extending from the structure block in each direction. Ensure the structure block is placed such that the mirrored structure doesn't overlap the original.

After defining the size, set the "Detect Size" toggle to "ON." This setting automatically calculates the dimensions based on the connected blocks, potentially simplifying size selection. Alternatively, players can manually determine the size by counting blocks. Accuracy is crucial for proper mirroring.

The "Show Bounding Box" toggle provides a visual representation of the selected area, making it easier to confirm the correct dimensions. Once satisfied with the size, click "Save" to save the structure. Ensure you remember the name you assigned to the structure, as it's essential for the next steps.

Now that the original structure is saved, the mirroring process can begin. Obtain a second structure block and place it where the mirrored structure should begin. Right-click the new structure block to open its interface. In the "Structure Name" field, input the exact name used for the original structure. Next, select "Load" from the "Mode" dropdown menu. This setting prepares the structure block to load the saved structure.

The "Mirror" option in the structure block interface is the key to creating the mirror effect. Choose one of the three mirror axes (X, Y, or Z) depending on the desired mirroring direction. "X" mirrors across the east-west axis, "Y" mirrors across the top-bottom axis (rarely used for mirror builds), and "Z" mirrors across the north-south axis. Selecting the appropriate axis is essential for achieving the desired mirror effect.

The "Integrity" slider determines how much of the structure is loaded. Setting it to 1.0 ensures the entire structure is mirrored. Lower values introduce a degree of randomness, with blocks having a chance not to be placed. This feature isn't typically used when aiming for a perfect mirror.

The "Seed" field controls the randomness introduced by the Integrity setting. Different seed values will result in different block placements if the integrity is less than 1.0. For perfect mirroring, the seed value is irrelevant.

The "Show Bounding Box" toggle in the loading structure block serves the same function as in the saving structure block, allowing visualization of the area where the mirrored structure will appear. Confirming the mirror axis and position is essential before loading the structure.

With the correct settings in place, click "Load." The previously saved structure will be loaded and mirrored according to the chosen axis. This process creates the impression of a mirror, reflecting the original structure.

Using banners to create a specific aesthetic within the mirrored build can enhance the effect. For example, designing a banner to look like a mirror frame and placing it around the mirrored area can further contribute to the illusion. Experimenting with banner designs adds a level of customization to the mirrored structure.

It is important to note that this method doesn't create a truly reflective surface. It merely duplicates and mirrors a structure. Changes made to the original structure will not be reflected in the mirrored copy unless the mirroring process is repeated. Additionally, items and entities are not mirrored. This technique provides a visual effect only.
