How to Put Molding Around a Mirror

Whether you're looking to add a touch of elegance to your bathroom or simply protect your mirror from damage, framing it with molding is a great option. The process is relatively simple and can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Mirror
  • Molding (appropriate for the size and style of your mirror)
  • Miter saw or miter box
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Brad nailer and brad nails
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Measuring and Cutting the Molding

The first step is to measure the perimeter of your mirror. Add 4 inches to this measurement to account for the mitered corners. Cut four pieces of molding to this length using a miter saw or miter box.

Creating the Frame

Apply a thin bead of wood glue to the mitered edges of the molding. Align the pieces and clamp them together firmly. Use a brad nailer to secure the joints. Wipe away any excess glue that may have squeezed out.

Attaching the Frame to the Mirror

Apply a generous amount of wood glue to the back of the molding. Carefully align the frame with the mirror and press it into place. Use clamps to hold the frame securely while the glue dries.

Finishing Touches

Once the glue has dried completely, use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges or imperfections. If desired, you can paint or stain the frame to match your mirror or decor.

Hanging the Mirror

Securely hang the mirror on the wall using appropriate hardware for the weight of the mirror and frame. Make sure the mirror is level and centered.

Tips:

  • For a more secure frame, you can use corner clamps to hold the mitered joints while the glue dries.
  • If your molding is not mitered, you can use corner blocks to create 90-degree angles.
  • Be careful not to apply too much glue, as it can squeeze out and make a mess.
  • Allow the glue to dry completely before hanging the mirror to ensure a strong bond.
  • To prevent the mirror from falling, use heavy-duty mirror hanging hardware and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully.
